Terms of use

About these terms

These terms govern Chinese Writer and chinesewriter.app, provided by 橙語管理顧問有限公司, trading as Merry Mandarin, in Taoyuan City, Taiwan (“we”, “us”). By using the product, you agree to these terms where they form a valid agreement under applicable law. If you are not legally able to enter an agreement, a parent or guardian must authorize your use.

We give you a limited, non-exclusive right to use the app for lawful personal learning, subject to these terms and the rules of the store from which you obtain it. No Merry Mandarin account is required. Do not infringe others’ rights, interfere with security or misrepresent ownership of our software or branding. Restrictions do not prevent activities permitted by law or an applicable open-source license.

The privacy policy explains data handling. It is not a request for blanket consent. Non-waivable consumer and privacy rights always apply.

Practice feedback

Stroke feedback compares your input with the character you are practicing. It is a learning aid, not general-purpose handwriting recognition or a teacher’s assessment. Scores may be affected by drawing style, device input and reference data. Freehand diary pages are not recognized; dictionary lookup is available for words in planned entries.

Dictionary entries, readings and practice content may contain errors or need context. The app does not promise a particular examination result, level of fluency or learning outcome. HSK describes curriculum coverage; Chinese Writer is not an official HSK examination or certification service.

Your content and backups

You retain your rights in the diary, text, sketches and handwriting you create. We do not acquire ownership or a right to publish your content merely because you use the app. You are responsible for having the necessary rights to content you enter or share.

Diary entries and progress are stored locally. There is no cloud recovery service. Export a .mmwriter backup before clearing storage, uninstalling or moving devices. PDF books are separate reading exports and cannot restore app progress. Exported files are not password-protected by the app. You are responsible for the destinations and recipients you choose. Device failure or loss may make local data unavailable.

Availability and purchases

Supported platforms, device requirements and prices appear in the relevant store listing. A website description of a platform in preparation does not promise a release date. Store checkout shows the applicable price and purchase conditions. These terms do not create a subscription or authorize a charge.

Transactions are subject to Google Play or Apple App Store terms. Use the store’s procedures for refund requests or contact us for assistance. Nothing here limits statutory withdrawal, refund, warranty or other consumer rights. We do not guarantee compatibility with every device or indefinite support for every operating-system version.

Ownership and third-party licenses

Except for your content and third-party material, the software, design and branding belong to us or our licensors. The following components retain their own terms, which prevail over conflicting restrictions here:

• CC-CEDICT: MDBG and community contributors, under CC BY-SA 4.0. The bundled dictionary reorganizes entries and adds normalized search indexes. See CC-CEDICT and the app’s notices.
• Stroke references: Hanzi Writer Data, derived from Make Me a Hanzi and Arphic fonts, under the Arphic Public License.
• Fonts and libraries: Inter and Noto use the SIL Open Font License; other dependencies have their respective licenses.

License texts are available in the app under Settings → Sources & licenses. Open-source terms do not grant rights to use our trademarks as your own.

Responsibility and consumer protections

We take reasonable care in providing the product, but software, reference data and automated feedback may contain mistakes or be unavailable. To the extent permitted by law, we make no additional promise that the product is error-free or meets every learning need.

Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be restricted, including statutory guarantees, fraud, intentional misconduct or mandatory consumer protections. Where a limitation is permitted, we are not responsible for losses that were not reasonably foreseeable from a breach or that arise from use outside personal language learning. Linked services are operated under their own terms; those links do not transfer responsibility for our product.

Updates and ending use

We may release improvements and compatibility or security updates, and will provide updates and notices required by law. Material changes to these terms will be communicated appropriately and will not retrospectively remove acquired rights. We will seek agreement where required.

You may stop using the app at any time. We may end the license for a material breach subject to required notice and an opportunity to remedy it. Ownership and accrued rights survive where appropriate.

Applicable law

The laws of the Republic of China (Taiwan) apply without depriving you of mandatory consumer protections in your country of habitual residence. Where legally permitted, disputes may be brought before the Taiwan Taoyuan District Court. This does not prevent consumers from using courts or remedies available under mandatory local law. If a provision is unenforceable, the remainder applies to the extent permitted by law.
